Acosta took out his jockey's license in 2002 and earned his forst stakes victory later that year in the West Virginia Futurity. A native of Puerto Rico, Acosta won a career-best 322 races in 2008 and earned a career-best $6,019,153 that year.
In 2009, Acosta scored his first graded stakes win with No Advantage in the Grade 3 William Donald Schaefer Stakes at Laurel Park.
