A Venezuela native, Martinez played for 18 seasons with three teams as a catcher, first baseman, and designated hitter.
In retirement, Martinez got involved in Thoroughbred racing and landed on the 2020 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve trail when King Guillermo, named after Martinez's father, won the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby at 49-1 odds.
