It took a talented filly in Warm Heart last year to give Europeans their first victory in the rich Pegasus World Cup Turf and they are back in a bid for a second triumph in a row. Godolphin’s multiple Grade 1 winner Nations Pride is included among an overflow field of 14 entered in Saturday’s renewal of the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes Presented by Qatar Racing.

Pegasus World Cup Turf

Racetrack: Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Date: Jan. 25

Purse: $1 million

Distance: 1 1/8 miles

Race: 12

Post Time: 4:55 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Warm Heart (2024), Colonel Liam (2021-’22) Zulu Alpha (2020), Bricks and Mortar (2019).

First held: 2019

1. Siege of Boston (20-1 morning-line odds): Had some traffic issues when fifth in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes. Could be an interesting longshot possibility from the rail.

JOCKEY: Junior Alvarado; TRAINER: James Toner

2. Formidable Man (15-1): Might live up to his name here after three straight Del Mar stakes wins, capped by a victory in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. Those wins came in stakes restricted to 3-year-olds, so this should be a big class test for him in his 4-year-old bow.

JOCKEY: Umberto Rispoli; TRAINER: Michael McCarthy

3. Mi Hermano Ramon (8-1): Another Californian shipping in after some solid efforts. Was second in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes to Johannes, who would have been one of the favorites here if he was entered. Should be well-suited by the distance and has one of the track’s top jockeys.

JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Mark Glatt

4. Win for the Money (12-1): Was part of a three-way win photo in the Ft. Lauderdale, winding up third after chasing the pace. Last year’s Rogers Woodbiine Mile winner certainly merits consideration in a highly competitive field.

JOCKEY: Dylan Davis; TRAINER: Mark Casse

5. Integration (3-1): Was second to Nations Pride in the Arlington Million Stakes in the summer. Comes off a decisive win in the Grade 2 Red Smith Stakes at Aqueduct and has been given some time off after that Nov. 9 win. Was favored in this race last year and finished fifth – once again, he can’t be ignored.

JOCKEY: Frankie Dettori; TRAINER: Shug McGaughey

6. Major Dude (6-1): Won the Ft. Lauderdale by a neck in a tight finish. Likes this course with two stakes wins here and should work out a nice trip, sitting just off the early pace. Another major player here.

JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

7. Nations Pride (2-1): Won the Arlington Million then was given three months off before flopping in a Group 2 stakes in Bahrain. Look for a much better performance here from a 6-year-old who already has three Grade 1 wins in North America.

JOCKEY: William Buick; TRAINER: Charlie Appleby

8. Spirit of St. Louis (20-1): Highly consistent New York-bred gelding takes a big jump in class but he has been competitive at this level. Two starts back he was fifth by 2 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland.

JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Chad Brown

9. Balnikhov (15-1): Deep closer from California will need a quick pace in front of him. Closed from ninth last time to finish second in the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup at a mile and a half distance.

JOCKEY: Oisin Murphy; TRAINER: Phil D’Amato

10. Battle of Normandy (20-1): Owns four straight wins but only the last one came in a graded stakes. Took the Grade 3 River City Stakes in that win but seems more of a threat for a spot in the exotics than a victory from an outside post.

JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Shug McGaughey

11. Grand Sonata (20-1): Was fourth in the Ft. Lauderdale and the connections thought enough of him to run in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. He’s worth a look, but it’s tough to win from this post.

JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

12. Chasing the Crown (20-1): Has yet to a win a stakes and this seems an unlikely spot for that to happen given the depth of the field and the outside post.

JOCKEY: Edgard Zayas; TRAINER: Mike Maker

13. Fort Washington (Also-eligible: 20-1): Lost by a neck in the Ft. Lauderdale but landed on the also-eligible list and will need a scratch to run from a bad post.

JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Shug McGaughey

14. Paros (AE: 30-1): Also-eligible entrant has won five straight races but was claimed for $40,000 four starts back and would face a tough task in Grade 1 company if he draws into the race.

JOCKEY: Javier Castellano; TRAINER: Mike Maker

THE PICK: Nations Pride
