Antonio Sano is the trainer of Gunnevera, who won the Saratoga Special Stakes and Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes in 2016. Gunnevera rocketed to the upper echelon of Derby contenders in late winter 2017 after he won the Xpressbet Fountain of Youth of Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Prior to that, he finished second in the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes.

Gunnevera ran seventh in the 2017 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and fifth in the Preakness before winning the Tangelo Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He subsequently finished second in the Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets before closing the year with a fifth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
In 2022, Sano resurfaced on the Kentucky Derby trail with another top contender based at Gulfstream Park. Simplification earned qualifying points for Derby 148 with a runner-up finish in the Holy Bull Stakes and a win in the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes.
Sano, a native of Venezuela, enjoyed success training in his home country before moving to the U.S., where he is based in south Florida. He also trained graded stakes winners Grand Tito, City of Weston, and Devilish Lady.
