Art Sherman began his horse racing career as an exercise rider, working for trainer Rex Ellsworth in 1953. He went to the Kentucky Derby in 1955 as the regular exercise rider for Swaps who won that year's Derby.
Sherman began riding races as a jockey in 1957 at Hollywood Park and retired from the saddle in 1978. He then began training racehorses, first as an assistant before taking out his training license in 1980.

Sherman trained primarily in Northern California until 2006, when he stabled 25 horses at Del Mar in San Diego. He has amassed over 1,800 victories and $37 million in winnings.
Sherman returned to the Kentucky Derby 60 years after his adventure with Swaps as the trainer of Derby favorite California Chrome. The colt easily won the Derby, making Sherman the oldest trainer to ever saddle a Kentucky Derby winner at 77 years of age. Two weeks later California Chrome and Sherman jumped the second hurdle of winning the Triple Crown when they won the Preakness Stakes. While California Chrome wasn't able to win the Triple Crown, he was named the 2014 Horse of the Year.
