Changed to a 1 3/8 mile turf race in 1986, the Del Mar Handicap is a turf race for horses 4-years and older at Del Mar. First run in 1937, the Del Mar Handicap has been won eight times by jockey Bill Shoemaker and seven times by Charlie Whittingham. Six horses have won the race twice while two owners have won it three times each. The 2008 winner Spring House holds the record for this race at the current distance, stopping the clock in 2:11.14.
