Set at 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) on Churchill Downs’ dirt track, this race is open to 2-year-olds and it is run on opening day at the Churchill Downs Fall Meet. The race is named for Iroquois, the first American horse to win the Epsom Derby in England. The first points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the Iroquois is also a "Win and You're In" race for the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Winners of the race include Ide, Harlan's Holiday, Champali, The Cliffs's Edge, Astrology and Canadian Horse of the Year Uncaptured.
