First run going 1 1/16 miles on turf at Keeneland for 3-year-old fillies in 1989, the Appalachian was shortened to one mile in 1996 and given its first grade in 2008. Run in early April every year, the race attracts some of the top 3-year-old turf fillies in the country with horses such as Winter Memories, Dayatthespa and Lady Eli winning it since 2010. Three trainers are tied with the most wins at two each while Pat Day has the most wins of any jockey at four and Brereton Jones and Team Valor tied at two wins each as the winningest owners. Halo River won the fastest edition of the race in 1998 with White Corners winning by the largest margin in 1992 with a six length victory.
